"Since I've been at The Dance Studio, I've become a better dancer because the teachers are great and dancing is fun here."

-- Tap Dancer, age 12

"Exercise should be a part of everyone's life. It keeps you fit, and mentally and physically alert. I've been attending The Dance Studio classes for over 20 years. Jennifer's classes, besides being excellent workouts, are accessible to all ages and all stages of fitness. Best of all, they are very enjoyable."

Every year in June, the students of The Dance Studio participate in the Recital. From ages three through adults our students grace the Whitman Theatre stage at Brooklyn College.

Preparation starts in December with teachers selecting music that matches their ideas of what performance each class will do. Costume measurements start in January to begin the ordering process and the classrooms are filled with excitement with what dance they will be doing for the big night. We do not spend our entire school year working on recital pieces. The first semester is devoted to learning technique so that choreography can be learned. A full Dress Rehearsal is held at the Theatre the week before the performance.

Our Recital is different from others, for a number of reasons. First, total length of our show is 2.5 to 3 hours, compared to many others that can hit that 5 hour mark. There is no theme to the Recital. Each teacher brings their own interpretation to each class’s performance. The evening flows from one remarkable moment to the next, astonishing and entertaining the audience of family and friends.

The Recital begins with a “Performance Fairy Tale”. These dancers are our youngest students, age 3, to participate. This is a remarkable moment for everyone. The laughter fills the auditorium as these little dancers move to the music as the Fairy Tale is narrated by students from our Musical Theatre class.

“My daughter joined the Dance Studio of Park Slope a year ago when she was almost 3. She joined the Three year program which was a drop-off class. She was going through some severe separation anxiety at the time. However, Jennifer (the owner and teacher) worked with her and me so that to my surprise she happily left with everyone else on the choo choo train after only three sessions. At the end of the year in June there was a recital at Brooklyn College on the big stage and my daughter together with her friends performed for 800 people! I was so proud of her that I cried through the entire program! The personal attention we got throughout the whole year was wonderful and the recital at the end of the year was amazing. Jennifer gives her heart and soul to her studio and the children are so lucky to have her! I had originally planned for Emma to enjoy her summer with no classes since she was starting full-time school in the fall. However, she begged me every day to go to dance classes over the summer as well that I finally gave in. I can't wait for Emma to continue dancing in the fall and for my younger daughter to start as well.”

We move next to the age 4 Creative Dance Performance. These students amaze us every year with what they have accomplished and the individual personalities that shine through on the big stage.

“This year's recital was such a wonderful celebration of dance! We were so happy that Maia wanted to be a part of it after three years as your student. Maia has grown so much since she started at The Dance Studio of Park Slope and she was so excited to be part of the recital. She talked about it all year and when it happened, she was thrilled! You and your staff did an amazing job preparing the students to perform in front of a large audience. But what was most apparent was how much fun all the dancers were having performing their dances. The audience of parents, family and friends couldn't have enjoyed it more. Thank you for three wonderful years, with many more classes and recitals to come!”

-- Fondly, Nina, Mom to Maia, age five

The Ballet/Jazz/Tap dancers, age 5, are highlights of the performance with each unique tap performance.

The groups that follow, ages 6 and up, from beginners through junior/senior advanced are: Ballet, Tap, Musical Theatre, Jazz/Hip Hop Fusion and Contemporary performance pieces.

“The Dance Studio of Park Slope has been our anchor for more than five years. There is always a first rate class to suit my daughter's interests with a gifted teaching staff. The end of the year recital on an adult-sized stage in front of an audience of hundreds makes my child feel like a well trained professional. She walks taller and prouder for months following the show.”

-- Rachel and Sophia

The Dance Studio stands alone with the performance opportunity that is offered to our Adult Students in both Ballet and Tap. These are former professional dancers, as well as, recreational dancers that find the time from their now busy schedules to bring the joy of performance back into their lives.

"All the little sacrifices made to find time for class and for rehearsal are just nothing -- absolutely nothing -- compared to the incredible high of performing! I am very fortunate that I can still perform and that I am afforded this opportunity to do so. Thank you Jenn, Julie and Setsuko! "

-- Holly, adult ballet student

The Recital ends with a faculty and junior /senior advanced students Finale piece. The stage overflows with energy and accomplishment.

All of us, Faculty Staff, Students and Audience share a truly wonderful evening of performance memories! It’s One Of A Kind!
